Fun facts

The terminal prints these one at a time with facts. Here they all are.

  • 01

    The starting line

Started running to lose weight and get healthier after kid number two showed up. No grand plan, just a first mile.

  • 02

    Training math

When there is a 50 or 100 miler on the calendar, a marathon is not a race. It is a Saturday.

  • 03

    The broken leg run

Ran over 20 miles on a stress fracture. Dropped at mile 24 of a 100 miler, and the x-rays found the break in the left leg afterward. The leg had been trying to say something for a while.

  • 04

    The hat

Same Squatchalope hat for every single race. It has brought luck and it has brought pain. Still going on the next start line.

  • 05

    DNFs on purpose

Two DNFs sit on this site right next to the finishes: Midstate Massive 100 and Stone Cat 100k. Failures teach as much as wins.

  • 06

    Game Boy Christmas

A neon green Game Boy Color with Pokemon Blue was the best Christmas gift ever. The backlight never showed up, but the coil light got the job done.

  • 07

    Running soundtrack

Most runs happen without music. The wind in the trees and the footsteps are enough company.

  • 08

    Giving back

Leads Soles of Medfield, a local nonprofit, and serves on the board for the Medfield Coalition for Public Education.

  • 09

    Real food fuel

Gels are fine, but turkey and cheese rollups with pickles win on long runs. Real food sits better.

  • 10

    Early morning miles

Runs happen before the rest of the house wakes up. Early miles are the most honest miles.

    Best advice

Everyone has their own preferences: pace, shoes, gear. The trick is figuring out what works for you and ignoring the rest.
